Merz und Mahler Telescope

This is the original telescope of the Cincinnati Observatory, the 1842 Merz und Mahler 12-inch refractor. The telescope is shown in its parked position -- straight up to help avoid bending of the wooden optical tube by gravity. The telescope is in fine operating order and continues in use today. The Big Telescope

Shown here is the Cincinnati Observatory's 16-inch Alvan Clark & Sons refracting telescope in its parked position. The telescope was delivered to this location in February 1904 and is in excellent operating condition. A weight-driven clock mechanism lets the big scope accurately track celestial objects across the sky. Photo by James Guilford.
